Abraham Solomon - Doubtful Fortune

Exhibited RA 1856.
oil on panel
"We know we're cheated, yet would fain believe."
A replica of a larger painting of the same title and an even smaller replica is known. The house has been identified as David Solomon's house "Broomhill" looking across to the Common of Rusthall. The sitters are Clara Phillips with Emma (Mrs. Philip Solomons) and Jeanette. The girls were noted by critics for being painted as 'real flesh and blood'.
