Henry Nelson O'Neil

[Eastward Ho! August 1857] 1861
oil on cradled panel
A variant of his famous painting first exhibited at the RA in 1858 with the same title. One of the most popular Victorian images showing troops leaving for the Indian Mutiny.
[Home Again] 1859
oil on cradled panel
The sequel (this is a version he painted) showing the wonded troops returning to Gravesend Pier to be re-united with their families. Several of the same faces from the earlier work are shown again. These replicas were common for popular pictures. A coloured mezzotint was engraved by William Turner Davey in 1861.
