James Collinson

[Temptation] 1855
oil on panel
the original title was 'Bleeding (ie. fleecing) a Freshman' and a price of 88gns.
A field surgeon's knife is being traded for a crown coin. Notice the lettering GWR / Slough on the trunk and the school is meant to be Eton, though the furnishings are not correct for that school at that time (Susan Casteras). It was exhibited at the RA the same year it was painted.
.
1825 - 1881.
Collinson was one of the original seven Pre-Raphaelite 'brothers'.
