John Mulcaster Carrick

The recruiting sergeant (actually a corporal) is wearing the insignia of the 75th Regiment, formed to fight in the Indian Mutiny 1857/8. The scene is set opposite St Mary's Church in Thorpe, Surrey (where he lived at the time). Recruiting was typically done outside public houses.

Carrick belonged to the Hogarth Club which had sympathy with the Pre-Raphaelites.

He is a Sergeant! The single stripe with a Union Jack over it on his sleeve was the rank badge of a Colour Sergeant in the mid-Victorian period.

Thanks. I thought so too but the commentary I had said he was a Corporal. I must look into this further. Appreciate your observation.
