Thomas Brooks - Relenting

1855
oil on canvas
"The silence often of pure innocence persuades / where speaking fails"
Shakespeare "The Winter's Tale"

A classic Victorian story picture of a poor widow and her children beseeching the landlord for mercy. Notice the clever touches, the dead husband's sword and portrait and the empty watch case - an empty bird cage, medicine bottles etc.
Exhibited at the RA the same year.
