What makes it fascinating, the artistry apart, is that it announces an innovation in the supply of printing inks. Instead of the more usual tins, the inks are now in collapsible tubes which had been in use for some time for their artists colours. The metal tube was invented in 1841 and Winsor and Newton at once saw its potential as a container for their high quality water colour paints. They invented the screw cap for metal tubes so that they could be opened again and again and leave the contents in good condition.
