You will find my reaction to this painting interesting. Just goes to show how living in a different setting than the painter can evoke a totally different meaning to the story.

When I saw the painting--I thought his knees were bloodied and they had just fled the farm ravaged by a bad storm that had just passed. We have those kinds of storms where people flee for their lives.

But after looking at the painting more closely I saw that the farm was undisturbed where I expected it to be in ruins. So I read the real meaning--and smiled to myself----I come from different circumstances than the painter.

Had she been from NC, she might have displayed the family misfortune by showing a ravaged farm from a passing tornado.

When I worked in Kansas City for a while I remember seeing the tornado warnings on the local tv - as you say very different from here.
