The boy at the head of the table seems to have his priorities right. The child at the front on the right has a wonderfully realistic air of concentration. But whatever is wrong with the mum? Her detachment from the meal table suggests a lurking tragedy - along with the empty chair . . . which, rather mundanely and irrelevantly sends me off into memories of when every home had one just like it.

Funnily enough just been out with a chap whouse Aunt had 9 children and he was just talking about what chaos meal times were. All good points you made.

Love the dog's expression. Does anyone know what the thing is on the table that looks like a wooden compass with a blade? Thanks. Sal
